Annabel Lee

A poem by Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) was an American poet and short-story writer known for his exploration of death, love and the darker corners of the human mind. 'Annabel Lee,' first published in 1849, is believed to be his last completed poem. It tells the story of a young man's obsessive devotion to a childhood love who has died, set against a haunting coastal landscape. The poem's rhythm and repetition give it the quality of a ballad, a song of mourning and undying love. Poe's work is worth reading because it asks whether love can survive death, and whether devotion that refuses to let go is noble or tragic. This text reflects its era.
