To J.W.
A poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882) was an American essayist, poet and leader of the Transcendentalist movement, which emphasised individual conscience, the inherent goodness of people and nature, and self-reliance. "To J.W." was first published in the mid-nineteenth century as part of Emerson's collected poems. The poem is written in the form of direct counsel, urging the recipient (and the reader) to turn away from dwelling on the errors of the past and the criticism of the dead, and instead to engage fully with the living world and pursue one's own aims before time runs out. This text is worth a reader's time because it crystallises a powerful question: how will you spend the brief light you are given? This text reflects its era.
