The Bell
From Andersen's Fairy Tales, by Hans Christian Andersen
Hans Christian Andersen published this tale in the mid-nineteenth century, during a period when he was writing some of his most philosophical fairy tales. Unlike his stories of mermaids and tin soldiers, 'The Bell' is an allegory about the search for spiritual truth. The story asks what we are willing to sacrifice in order to find what truly matters, and whether the journey itself might be more important than any single answer. Andersen contrasts those who are easily satisfied with shallow explanations against those who press on despite difficulty and doubt. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. The story rewards a reader willing to think symbolically and consider what the 'bell' might represent beyond a simple object.
