Mr. Fox
From English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs
Joseph Jacobs compiled English Fairy Tales in the late nineteenth century, collecting folk tales passed down orally for generations. 'Mr. Fox' is a variant of the Bluebeard tale—the story of the forbidden chamber—and was well-known enough in Shakespeare's time that Much Ado About Nothing refers to it directly. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. The story is worth reading because it shows a heroine who trusts her instincts, acts with courage and intelligence, and exposes evil not through magic or luck, but through witness and testimony. It is a tale of justice earned, not given.
