To My Mother
A poem by Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) was an American poet and writer known for dark tales and haunting verse. This poem was written in 1849, shortly before Poe's death, and was addressed to his mother-in-law, Mrs. Maria Clemm, who cared for him after his wife Virginia died. The poem reflects its nineteenth-century era. It is worth reading because it shows a side of Poe many do not expect: not the master of horror, but a man capable of deep gratitude and tender devotion. It reminds us that family can be chosen as well as born, and that love often reveals itself most clearly in times of loss. This text reflects its era.
