Sindbad's Seventh and Last Voyage
From The Arabian Nights Entertainments, collected by Andrew Lang
This story comes from The Arabian Nights Entertainments, a collection of Middle Eastern folk tales gathered and retold by Andrew Lang in the late nineteenth century. Sindbad the Sailor is one of the most famous characters from the Arabian Nights, and this seventh voyage—his last—brings his adventures full circle: he is forced to sea one final time, loses everything to pirates, becomes a slave, and yet finds his way home richer and wiser than before. The tale rewards cleverness, courage under pressure, and the recognition that sometimes animals possess a wisdom all their own. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised.
