The Bell-Deep
From Fairy Tales, by Hans Christian Andersen
Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1877) was a Danish writer famous for his fairy tales and stories. This tale was first published in the nineteenth century and is set in Andersen's home town of Odense, on the island of Funen. The story mingles Danish legend with history: King Canute (Knud) II of Denmark was indeed killed in St. Alban's Church in Odense in 1086. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. Andersen's tale invites the reader to wonder what stories lie hidden in the places we pass every day, and reminds us that the air around us carries memory longer than stone or bronze.
