The Bottle Neck
From Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen
Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875) was a Danish author famous for fairy tales that are beloved around the world. 'The Bottle Neck' was first published in the mid-nineteenth century and is one of his quieter, more reflective stories—a meditation on time, memory and the strange paths objects take through our lives. Andersen gives the bottle a voice and a memory, so that we see human joy and sorrow from an unexpected angle. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. The story is worth a child's time because it teaches us to notice the small things that witness our lives, and because it shows how the past is never quite lost, even when we cannot recognise it.
