The Water-Lily
From The Blue Fairy Book, collected by Andrew Lang
Andrew Lang collected this tale in The Blue Fairy Book, one of his famous colour fairy books published in the late nineteenth century. The story combines elements found in many European folk tales: enchantment, faithful love, animal helpers and magical transformation. Like many fairy tales, it teaches that courage and persistence can overcome even the darkest magic, and that promises made must be kept. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised.
