Tom Tit Tot
An English fairy tale collected by Joseph Jacobs
Tom Tit Tot is one of the best-known English fairy tales, collected by Joseph Jacobs and first published in 1890. It is the English version of the Rumpelstiltskin story, but told in the dialect and spirit of rural Suffolk. The tale teaches that cleverness and courage can turn a bad situation around, and that names have power. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised.
