This is one of the famous fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm in Germany during the early nineteenth century. It tells the story of a youngest son whom everyone underestimates, but who proves himself through kindness and courage. Like many fairy tales, it rewards the gentle-hearted and teaches that wisdom is not always found where people expect it. The Grimms gathered these stories from oral tradition and published them so families everywhere could share them. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised.
