Rushen Coatie
A Scottish fairy tale from More English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs
This reader is retold from "Rushen Coatie," a Scottish variant of the Cinderella story collected by Joseph Jacobs in More English Fairy Tales (1894). Jacobs created a composite version from several oral tellings gathered across Scotland in the late nineteenth century. In this Scottish tale, the heroine's helper is a magical red calf left by her mother, who provides food, clothing and comfort. The story reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. This tale is worth a child's time because it shows that kindness and patience are rewarded, and that help can come from unexpected friends.
