Hansel and Grethel

From Household Stories by the Brothers Grimm, by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm

This story is one of the most famous tales collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in the nineteenth century, passed down through generations before they wrote it down. It is a story of courage, cleverness and love between a brother and sister who face a terrifying trial in the woods. Hansel's quick thinking and Grethel's bravery save them both. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. The tale is worth a child's time because it shows how children can be brave and clever even when things seem hopeless, and how family love can overcome great danger.
