This tale comes from Household Stories collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in the early 1800s in Germany. The brothers gathered old folk stories and wrote them down so they would not be lost. This story teaches that friends who help each other can be strong together, even when they are old or small on their own. A few period terms have been modernised. The animals never actually reach Bremen, but they find something better — a home and friendship.
