The Celestial Sisters
A legend retold from The Indian Fairy Book by Cornelius Mathews
The Indian Fairy Book was compiled by Cornelius Mathews in the nineteenth century, collecting traditional Indigenous legends from across North America. This story comes from the Ojibwe (Chippewa) tradition and explains the origin of the white hawk. The tale blends transformation, love, and the connection between earth and sky. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. This legend is worth reading because it shows how traditional stories answered the question 'Where did this animal come?' and celebrated the hunter's courage and patience.
