Old Mother Hubbard

A nursery rhyme from The Nursery Rhymes of England, collected by J. O. Halliwell-Phillipps

This rhyme comes from The Nursery Rhymes of England, a nineteenth-century collection gathered by James Orchard Halliwell-Phillipps, a scholar who saved hundreds of traditional verses and songs from being forgotten. "Old Mother Hubbard" is one of the most-loved nonsense rhymes in English, remembered for its cheerful absurdity and the dog's surprising antics each time Mother Hubbard returns home. The text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. Children delight in the pattern, the playfulness and the joyful silliness of a dog that refuses to stay still.
