Love and Matrimony

Nursery rhymes retold from The Nursery Rhymes of England, collected by J. O. Halliwell-Phillipps

This reader is retold from The Nursery Rhymes of England, collected by J. O. Halliwell-Phillipps and illustrated by William Bell Scott, first published in the mid-nineteenth century. The source is a collection of traditional English nursery rhymes, many of them centuries old, passed down through oral tradition. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. The rhymes in the "Love and Matrimony" section tell playful stories of courtship and marriage, woven here into a single narrative. These verses teach young readers that careful questions matter, that promises have weight, and that joy follows thoughtful choices.
