Natural History
Nursery rhymes from The Nursery Rhymes of England, collected by J. O. Halliwell-Phillipps
This reader draws from The Nursery Rhymes of England, a collection gathered by James Orchard Halliwell-Phillipps in the mid-nineteenth century. The rhymes reflect centuries of oral tradition, passed from voice to voice before they were ever written down. These animal verses are among the gentlest in the collection — the cuckoo's song, the robin's hunger, the hen's daily work — and they invite a young child into the rhythms of the natural world and the pleasure of language itself. A few period terms have been modernised. This text is worth a child's time because it carries the musicality, the wit and the wonder of the nursery rhyme tradition at its best.
