The Nursery Rhymes of England
From the collection by J. O. Halliwell-Phillipps
These nursery rhymes were collected by J. O. Halliwell-Phillipps in the nineteenth century from English towns and villages. Each rhyme names a real place—Woodstock, King's Sutton, Felton, Bicester, Lincolnshire—and tells a little story or paints a picture of life there long ago. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. Rhymes like these were sung and spoken by children for hundreds of years, passing down the sounds and sights of England from one generation to the next. They are worth a child's time because they are playful, musical, and full of the wonder of everyday things.
