Musketaquid
From Poems by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Musketaquid is the Algonquian name for the river (later called the Concord River) that flows through Concord, Massachusetts, where Ralph Waldo Emerson lived and wrote in the mid-nineteenth century. In this reflective poem, first published in the nineteenth century, Emerson describes how he found spiritual and intellectual richness not in grand landscapes or high society, but in the humble fields and streams of his home. He contrasts the visitor's passing glance with the farmer's deep knowledge of the land, then explains how close observation of even a small garden reveals the same universal laws that govern the stars. The poem is a meditation on humility, self-reliance, and the profound freedom that comes from living in harmony with nature. It stands as a clear expression of the Transcendentalist belief that the divine can be found in the everyday, and that true liberty lies not in wealth or status, but in plain dealing with the natural world. This text reflects its era.
