Threnody
From Poems by Ralph Waldo Emerson
Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote "Threnody" after the death of his five-year-old son, Waldo, in 1842. First published in 1847, the poem is one of the most profound elegies in American literature. It moves through the raw agony of a father's loss to a transcendental vision in which the "Deep Heart" — Nature, or the divine voice within — offers consolation: what is excellent is permanent, and love survives bodily death. Emerson was the leading voice of American Transcendentalism, a movement that saw Nature as the visible expression of spiritual truth. This poem tests that belief at its breaking point and finds it, barely, able to hold. It is worth a senior reader's time because it confronts grief without evasion and asks whether philosophy can survive the death of a child. This text reflects its era.
