Cinderella
From Grimm's Fairy Stories, by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
This reader retells "Cinderella" from Grimm's Fairy Stories by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, first published in the early nineteenth century. This version of the tale is older than the one many children know today: instead of a fairy godmother, Cinderella is helped by a white bird that lives in a tree she planted with her own tears. The story shows that kindness and goodness are more valuable than beauty or fine clothes, and that cruelty does not win in the end. A few period terms have been modernised.
