The Baker's Tale
From The Hunting of the Snark: An Agony in Eight Fits by Lewis Carroll
Lewis Carroll published The Hunting of the Snark in 1876, a nonsense poem about a crew hunting a mysterious creature. "The Baker's Tale" is the fourth section, where the Baker finally tells why he is so afraid. Carroll, who also wrote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, loved absurd logic and invented words. The Snark and the Boojum are completely imaginary — no one knows what they are, and that is part of the fun. This story is worth reading because it shows how Carroll turned fear and imagination into playful, musical verse that children have loved for more than a century. This text reflects its era.
