Ice and Darkness
Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea by Jules Verne · Episode 8 of 8
Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea was written by French author Jules Verne and first published in 1869–1870. This is the final episode of eight, bringing Aronnax's ten-month undersea journey to its conclusion. Verne wrote some of the earliest science fiction, imagining submarines and underwater exploration decades before they became real. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. The reader is worth a child's time because it shows courage under terrible danger, the cost of revenge, and the power of loyalty between friends—and because it asks whether wonder can ever excuse cruelty.
