Prince and Princess

From Stories from Hans Andersen, by H. C. Andersen

This story comes from Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish writer of fairy tales, first published in the nineteenth century. It is part of the longer tale The Snow Queen, in which Gerda travels across the world searching for her lost friend Kay. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. The episode shows courage, kindness and the help strangers can offer when a child is determined to do what is right. Though Gerda does not find Kay at the palace, her journey continues.
