The Little Robber Girl

From Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen

This reader is adapted from The Snow Queen, a literary fairy tale by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, first published in 1844. In the full story, Gerda is searching for her friend Kay, who has been taken by the magical Snow Queen. This episode shows one of Gerda's strangest meetings on her long journey: a wild robber girl who threatens and teases her, yet in the end helps her because she sees Gerda's bravery and love. Andersen's tale has inspired countless retellings and remains one of the most beloved fairy tales in the world. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised.
