Grace Darling

Grace Darling was a real lighthouse keeper's daughter who, in 1838, rowed out with her father into a fierce storm off the Farne Islands to rescue shipwrecked sailors. This story is retold from James Baldwin's Fifty Famous Stories, a collection first published in 1896. A few period terms have been modernised. Grace's courage made her famous across Britain, and her story is still remembered today as an example of bravery and selflessness.
