How Fear Came

From The Second Jungle Book, by Rudyard Kipling

This reader retells 'How Fear Came' from The Second Jungle Book (1895) by Rudyard Kipling. Kipling created the character of Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves in the Indian jungle, and wrote stories of the jungle's laws and the animals who live by them. This tale explains why animals fear humans and why the tiger hunts man. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. The story is a frame tale: Hathi the elephant tells an origin story to explain the present situation, a structure found in myth and folklore across many cultures. Children encounter the idea that laws exist for a reason and that actions have lasting consequences.
