The Dragon Tamers
From The Book of Dragons, by E. Nesbit
This story is from The Book of Dragons by E. Nesbit, first published in 1900. Nesbit was an English writer famous for her children's tales full of magic, adventure, and cleverness. This story shows that even the fiercest creature can become gentle when treated with care and kindness—and it also explains (in a wonderfully silly way) why all cats have claws and must have their bread and milk! The blacksmith's poverty and the mayor's greed reflect the real world Nesbit knew, where working families often struggled while the powerful took credit for others' bravery. A few period terms have been modernised.
