This fairy tale was first published in the eighteenth century by French author Madame Leprince de Beaumont, who also wrote Beauty and the Beast. Andrew Lang included it in The Blue Fairy Book, his 1889 collection of tales from many lands. The story teaches that we often cannot see our own faults until they stand in the way of something we truly want. Self-love can be a kind of blindness, and sometimes we need to listen to others—even when we do not want to hear what they have to say.
