The Mirror and Its Fragments
From Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales, by Hans Christian Andersen
This story comes from Hans Christian Andersen, the Danish author who gave us The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, and many other beloved fairy tales. He first published this tale in the nineteenth century. This is the opening of his longer story The Snow Queen, which tells what happens when one of the mirror's splinters gets into a little boy's eye and heart. Andersen's fairy tales often show how small acts of wickedness can spread and cause great harm, but also how goodness and love can overcome them. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised.
