Kate Crackernuts is a traditional Scottish fairy tale collected by Joseph Jacobs in his 1890 book English Fairy Tales. Jacobs gathered folk stories from across Britain to preserve them for children and scholars. This tale is a story of sisterly love and courage: Kate risks her own safety to save her sister Anne from a wicked curse and to heal a sick prince. The story shows that loyalty, bravery and cleverness can break even the strongest magic. It is a fine example of the clever-girl hero found in many old fairy tales.
