The Vale to You, to Me the Heights
A fable retold from a poem by Victor Hugo
Victor Hugo was a French writer who lived in the nineteenth century and wrote poems, novels and plays that are still read today. This fable comes from one of his poetry collections, first published in the mid-1800s. A fable is a short story with a lesson, often with animals that speak. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. Hugo's lesson is that the world is large enough for everyone when we choose to share instead of fight, and that pride and anger lead only to ruin.
