The Fifth Voyage of Sindbad
From The Arabian Nights Entertainments, collected by Andrew Lang
This reader is adapted from the fifth voyage of Sindbad the Sailor, a tale cycle embedded in The Arabian Nights, or One Thousand and One Nights. Andrew Lang published this English version in the late nineteenth century as part of his folklore collections. The story reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. Sindbad's voyages blend adventure, moral consequence, and the lure of the unknown — a restless merchant who cannot resist the call of the sea, even when every voyage costs him dearly. This voyage asks what drives a person to risk everything for the sake of curiosity and whether cleverness and luck are enough to survive the world's dangers.
