Sindbad's Fifth Voyage
From The Arabian Nights, retold from Andrew Lang's collection
This story comes from The Arabian Nights, a collection of tales from the Middle East and South Asia compiled over many centuries. Andrew Lang retold these stories in English in the late nineteenth century. Sindbad the Sailor is one of the most famous characters from the collection, a merchant who cannot resist the call of the sea even when every voyage brings him close to disaster. This fifth voyage shows Sindbad's courage, cleverness, and determination to survive no matter what dangers he faces. The tale reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised.
