Episode Two of Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea by Jules Verne

This is the second of two episodes from Jules Verne's Vingt mille lieues sous les mers (1870). The chase at nineteen and three-tenths miles an hour, the grey-bearded gunner, Conseil's courtesy in the middle of the Pacific and Ned Land's flat verdict are all Verne's, in Lewis Mercier's 1873 English. The engraving of the gunner in this reader is marked at this exact point in the original edition. Verne's own judgement is worth noticing: he calls a machine built by a person a more astonishing phenomenon than the sea monster everyone had been arguing about. The whole of the rest of the novel happens inside it.
