This is the second of two episodes from Jules Verne's Vingt mille lieues sous les mers (1870). The chase, the grey-bearded gunner, the harpoon that rings instead of biting and Conseil's unshakeable politeness in the middle of the Pacific are all Verne's. His word for what Ned finds is “sheet iron” — the plate a real ship was built from — and the moment it rings under the professor's hand is the moment the book stops being a monster hunt.
