Part Two of Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea by Jules Verne

This is the second of two episodes from Jules Verne's Vingt mille lieues sous les mers (1870). The first episode asked what the thing in the sea was; this one answers it. Verne's own word for what Ned discovers is “sheet iron” — the plates a real ship was built from — and the moment it rings hollow under the professor's hand is the moment the whole story turns from a hunt into something else. The rest of the book happens inside that iron boat.
