Darzee's Chant
From The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling, 1894
Rudyard Kipling published The Jungle Book in 1894. 'Darzee's Chant' is a poem sung by a tailor bird to honour Rikki-tikki-tavi, the mongoose who saved the garden from a deadly cobra. Kipling wrote with a deep love for India, where he spent much of his early life, and his animal characters carry the courage, loyalty and humour he saw in the world around him. This reader is worth a child's time because it shows that even the smallest creatures recognise true bravery, and that gratitude and celebration have their own kind of music. This text reflects its era.
