Darzee's Chant
From The Jungle Book, by Rudyard Kipling
Rudyard Kipling published The Jungle Book in 1894, a collection of stories about animals and people in India. 'Darzee's Chant' is a poem sung by a tailor-bird after the brave mongoose Rikki-tikki-tavi saves the garden from a deadly cobra. This text reflects its era; a few period terms have been modernised. The story shows how even small creatures can recognise and celebrate true courage, and how heroes often care more about doing what is right than hearing praise.
